My students need easy to read book sets that they can check out from me to read independently over the summer break so they don't forget what they've learned.
How do you become better at soccer or get better at using your iPhone? By practicing! Beginning readers need lots of practice with books that are just right for them, but it is difficult to find these kinds of books. I want to provide easy books for my struggling readers to read over the summer!
My students are first and second graders who have needed extra help learning to read.
They attend a large neighborhood school in South Carolina that has an intensive focus on literacy development. The students desperately want to read interesting books that are easy enough so that the reading is enjoyable. They have a hard time finding enough of these easy books on their own.
My Project
Finding books that beginning readers can read on their own is difficult. The books I have chosen are just right for these readers and are about topics children love - animals, friends, and fun times. By having these books to take home to read over the summer, the students will have just right resources at their fingertips. We hope to prevent the "summer slide" so many children experience by checking out books that are just right for each reader.
Please help prevent the summer slide students have when they don't have the right materials to practice their reading during summer vacation.
