My Students
What if a backpack could improve a child's reading skills? What if children could bring home an opportunity to increase their reading performance and also have fun learning with their families?
I teach 30 students in an urban public school.
They come from many neighborhoods and have varying levels of resources available to them at home. They are incredibly curious and love playing games. My students go home every night and share their excitement about the new topics they are learning with their families. They know that practice helps their brains grow and work very hard every day to become better readers.
My Project
My students will be able to check out reading totes full of engaging, reading games to help improve their reading skills. The bags will be themed to provide the most targeted, practice possible. Families will choose which bags they want to check out and will be able to keep them at home for a week or two.
These materials will give students a fun way to continually reinforce what they are learning in the classroom while also spending quality time with their families.
The Lakeshore Reading Comprehension Game Library has engaging games covering the skills of cause and effect, main idea, making inferences, and more! The CanDo Cans include writing and language skills, including vocabulary, affixes, and writing conventions.
Many games can be played by kids of all ages, including Bananagrams, Story Cubes, and Tall Tales. This will make sure that the whole family can be involved. I have also requested tote bags to make it easy to transport the materials to and from school.
