Help me give my students an opportunity to learn how to read by decoding specific vowel sounds, adjacent consonants or vowel digraphs to provide lots of targeted reinforcement.
My students are reading at different levels from reading CVC words to vowel digraphs. They are English Language Learners and speak Chinese or Spanish at home with their families. For a majority of the children, our kindergarten classroom is their first official exposure to reading books written in English. It is definitely challenging for them. A few of my students are advanced readers beginning to read books with vowel digraphs, which is a first grade reading skill. All of the students feel proud of themselves when they figure out how to read new words using the phonics skills that they learned in class. In addition, students keep those books in their daily reading book bins for extra practice. Once a week, they read them to their reading buddies (second grade students). Their reading buddies are very impressed by the variety of words they able to read within the decodable books.
Our school is using a new curriculum this school year which teaches the students vocabulary words that integrate to the next (first) grade level.
This challenge is a good learning opportunity for students of all levels. These phonics skill building sets have short vowel/consonant blend books for emergent readers as well as vowel diagraph decodable books for advanced readers to help them become independent readers and writers.
As we know, reading sets a foundation for writing. They need to build their decodable skills in order to read independently and eventually will write independently. We are learning how to write informative writing and opinion writing, which require a lot of decodable skills since their vocabulary is very limited. They have to sound out many words in order to write a sentence. I believe these book sets will build my students' confidence in reading and writing.
