My students need books that will unlock the magic and wonder of reading for them; books at their reading level which tell stories they are interested in and love.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Latif's classroom raised $556

My Students
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free" F. Douglass. The most important part of our class is the Silent Sustained Reading time. I have adopted a philosophy of creating lifelong readers because I want my students to have a sense of fun and an ambition to experience books deeply.
Our school's student body is comprised of 1,321 students: 50% Black/African American, 40% White, 2% Hispanic/Latino, 7% two or more races, and 1% Asian.
The school serves 59 % of students from low-income residents (Illinois Report Card). Our focus is to increase and improve students' reading comprehension skills and to engage them in becoming problem solvers, flexible, and innovative graduates who will be productive members of an ever changing society.
I teach English to juniors and seniors, and each year, I serve 130 - 165 students from diverse backgrounds and abilities with real world, high school problems and issues. My students also have numerous strengths and positive attributes that just need to be tapped-into, in order for them to unlock their full potential. A little effort and support will go a long way with my students, and as an educator, it is not just my job to teach them how to punctuate students sentence properly, but to prepare them for their futures
My Project
Students will use these books to expand their reading ability, to build a reading community within the classroom, and to inspire each other to be lifelong readers. My kids share books, make podcasts, write reviews, and do book talks and trailers to promote these books. Since beginning the lifelong reader philosophy, student reading has increased in class. I want to keep going strong to increase literacy.
Your contribution to our classroom library will allow the excitement around reading to continue to grow.
It will allow students to reach grade level reading, therefore changing their educational future. Students who read at grade level earn higher grades, receive fewer disciplinary consequences, and stay in college longer than their lower-skilled peers. Please support me in making this possible for my students. This will quite literally change their lives.
