Reading for Writing!

My students need graphic novels (including comic books) to give them multiple perspectives for reading and writing non-fiction texts.

My Students

I am a teacher in a Title I school, and my students are faced with many challenges in and out of the classroom.

Our fifth grade is comprised of 52 exceptional students who show up every day, eager to learn, despite the challenges they face outside of our learning community.

Many students face challenges that are incomprehensible to the majority of us, and still they show up ready to learn.

Our students need social and emotional support in addition to support in closing learning gaps. Their success is our success, and they need us to give them the best learning opportunities.

My Project

Our focus this past year has been on increasing student engagement with regards to reading. I also try to inspire students to write the text that they read, and students love reading comic books and graphic novels. The best way to teach writing is to analyze examples and learn how to apply literary elements into our own writing.

Next year I plan to have my students parallel their narrative writing with a graphic novel or a comic book that they have enjoyed reading.

The addition of these books to our class library would help me provide the students with examples of effective writing in this genre.
