This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I would like to provide each student in my classroom with a new book of his/her choice monthly to take home to help build a home library. The students in my class read several grade levels below their actual grade. They do not own many books, if any at all. Reading something which they have chosen will encourage them to read more and will help them to become more fluent readers. At this point in their life, the students are very excited about books and learning to read. I want to ensure that they continue with this attitude toward reading. I feel that if they have a library, they will obtain a sense of pride and ownership. I also want to have enough books for the classroom to use in our read aloud time. These books will be read and enjoyed in the classroom for several years.
I teach a self-contained class of thirteen special education students. The children in this rural school come from varied backgrounds, but the majority of my students are from poor families with every little education. The school has 75% of its students on free lunch and 100% on free breakfast.
The project will require 13 books per month which would allow for each student to own one book a month. This project would last from September to the end of May. The project will cost approximately $600.00 to cover the cost of books.
The classroom will also have books for read aloud time or for students to read independently during the day. The project will allow each student to increase his/her ability to read and read fluently. With the ability to read, the students reading scores will increase. Their scores in other subjects will also show an increase. I believe that the ability to read is the key to success.
