My Project
Help me give my students a diverse collection of books that inspire environmental awareness and climate action through powerful storytelling and diverse perspectives.
My students are curious, creative thinkers who care deeply about the world around them.
As middle schoolers in an urban setting, many have limited access to nature and environmental experiences, yet they're increasingly aware of and concerned about climate change.
In our ELA classroom, we explore how storytelling can build empathy and inspire action. This collection of books will allow students to see environmental issues through multiple lenses from the scientific perspectives in "Our World Out of Balance" to the activism of young climate leaders in "A Bigger Picture" and "Rebel Girls Climate Warriors."
The fiction selections, like "The Last Wild" and "Haven Jacobs Saves the Planet," will help students connect emotionally to environmental themes through relatable characters facing real challenges. Books like "The Lorax" and "Fuzzy Mud" will spark discussions about human impact on natural systems, while diverse voices in works such as "Imaginary Borders" ensure students encounter perspectives beyond their own experiences.
These books will support our curriculum in multiple ways: building vocabulary, enhancing reading comprehension, developing critical thinking, and inspiring creative writing projects. As we read, students will create environmental journalism pieces, design climate action campaigns, and craft their own narratives about creating positive change.
By funding this project, you'll help my students develop not only as readers and writers but as environmentally conscious citizens equipped with the knowledge and empathy to address the defining challenge of their generation.
