Help me give my students a wide selection of reading materials for novel discussion groups ranging from classic novels like "Their Eyes Were Watching God" to modern poetry in "Call Us What We Carry".
Many of my students are gifted learners and I am looking to offer them choices in their learning because that helps capture their attention and motivates them to explore the world around them from different perspectives. I am focusing these choices on books that are more diverse and representative of the students in my school/classroom, as well as books that offer perspectives on racial justice.
By offering a choice of fiction, poetry, non-fiction and even technical reading, I can help my students re-engage with the printed word.
Sometimes they need a break from screens and with hard copies of the books, they can get that break. My students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read in small book study groups where they can discuss their reading together and create their own "sales" campaign that will attempt to convince the other students in the classes to choose their book. By having small discussion groups, it allows for choice, but also for sharing their thoughts and questions as they read together. They will also be designing book jackets for the books that focus on motifs and themes.
