Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This upcoming school year, I am taking on yet another new challenge. I will have the chance of once again teaching all subject areas to a 5th grade classroom. The wonderful students at my school make up the most wonderful 5th graders located in South Philadelphia. Our school is a very diverse school where 40% of our school population are English language learners, and there are 15 different languages spoken at our school. Our school has a strong community that works endlessly for the benefit of our terrific students. Everyone from the principal, staff, 500 students, and their parents work together each day.
My Project
Students are the voice of the future! Teaching them to become advocates of change is essential in helping students realize their potential to making a difference. Through books, students can build the foundation to unlocking this potential. Specifically filling our class bookshelves with fictional and non-fictional text that mirror people who look like them, while teaching anti-racism, activism and how to be an up-stander to those in need is the main reason for creating this project.
Using fictional and non-fictional books at various reading levels such as; "Blended", "The Youngest Marcher", and "Resist" students will dive deep into a library rich with diversity, activism and anti-racism.
Teaching tolerance and diversity has to be a natural everyday occurrence and having the resources to do so in a way that speaks for students is critical, especially now!
