Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Lights, Camera, Action! Students will be able to improve their reading fluency rates by practicing scripts in a group as well as with partners.
My elementary serves a diverse population and demographically is a very low socioeconomic area.
The students do not have a lot of resources, but they absolutely love reading scripts. They love performing and showing off to each other and their teacher.
My Project
I've used readers' theater scripts in the past and it has worked excellently. The students use the scripts as a reading center where they can time themselves and work at reading more words per minute. They also come up with questions about the scripts and quiz each other. If they meet their fluency goals they get to perform in front of the class.
I have some students who simply do not like to read and therefore do not practice reading.
However, by making it a group setting with scripts and characters everyone is engaged in learning and becoming a better reader. The kids just don't look at it like another boring reading time, but rather a fun time that just so happens to involve reading.
