Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach Humanities 101, a dual credit college course offered to high school students. I focus on literature, and during the course of the semester we read Oedipus Rex, Beowulf, The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales , The Prince, and A Christmas Carol. I do have copies of the first three works listed, but I do not have copies of The Prince or A Christmas Carol.
It is essential to introduce students to the power of literature and how it can be used to study what goes on in the world today.
The Prince will be an interesting read during this upcoming election year, and A Christmas Carol is a classic study in greed and treatment of the poor. Dickens, however, does provide a solution in terms of charity and sharing the spirit giving.
I believe that by giving my students these books and letting them write in them and study them, they can understand how literature and reading can provide not only historical knowledge, expand your vocabulary, but it can be used to create social awareness and change.
