Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach two English Language and Composition AP classes. Students in these classes are highly motivated high school juniors who have elected to take on a curriculum that matches that of a college writing class. Students are expected to read a wide variety of literature in order to prepare for the Advanced Placement test, which can earn them college credit.
Many of my students will be first generation college students. As a result, I feel responsible for adding to their cultural capital. In addition, our school has just opened Advanced Placement enrollment to any student willing to challenge themselves. This encouraging and exciting move means that textbooks are even more limited than before, especially since the budget to purchase textbooks has been exhausted due to the California budget crisis.
While I have often taught these two excellent works together to smaller classes, my students and I feel that, given the recent election of President Obama, Ellison's and Morrison's novels offer an interesting and valuable look at African-American literature and perspectives that cannot be missed because of a lack of resources. In addition to investigating the African-American experience, students can also compare the historical, gender, and socioeconomic contexts of "Invisible Man" and "Song of Solomon." In short, these texts will help them enter a university level debate without leaving high school.
With your help, I can help share this interesting unit on race, gender, class, and citizenship with more students than have ever had the opportunity to take this rigorous AP class. It is my hope that, with your help, the lesson will propel them to success on the AP test in May, and at a university in the future.
