Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten teacher in California. I have been working at this school for the past six years. One thing that keeps me coming back every year is the commitment of the school to make a difference in the life of my students. This school is a small charter school with a limited amount of resources yet the school makes every effort to do the best they can to offer the best education possible to each and every one of their students. I live in another city 45 miles away from my school, it is for this reason that I am willing to fight the distance and hardship that it places on my family to help make this school the best it can be. This is a low income community where 99.9% of the students qualify for free lunch. Most of my students come from single parent homes where the struggles of life such as the lack of food, clothing, and shelter are their common scene everyday.

The library is one of the most visited places in my classroom. My students love to read books. However, we are in dire need for quality books. We only have 30 books and all of them are in poor condition due primarily to the number of times the students are forced to use them. My students have an unsatisfied hunger for reading. They ask me if I could get new books for them because the ones we have are not fun anymore.

Books and more Books are what my students so desperately need. Reading means a lot to them. They love to listen to stories and to read books by themselves. Reading is a window that opens to the world a world of imagination and dreams. It is a proven fact that the more books children read, the more creative and better problem solvers they become. When children read books, they acquire new vocabulary, learn how to write, improve their comprehension skill, and for that reason they do better on state assessments. Students who read books do better in college and are less likely to drop out of school.

It is now up to donors like you that can make the difference in the lives of needy students like mine who will be the future of our country and all mankind as a whole. Your donation will keep these students reading and learning to make the world of tomorrow a better place to live. The donation that you give will be used to supply my students with fiction books, non-fiction books including poetry but best of all it will put lots of smiles on these earlier learners’ faces with every word they read.
