Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Want to know why my second graders need books? Here is a harsh fact: 2/3 of students who cannot read by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare (Source: Write Express Corporation. "Literacy Statistics." Begin to Read. Accessed February 24, 2015). Let's get kids reading!

Fortunately, these literacy stats don't have to be our reality.

Despite the fact that most of my students will come to me at least one year behind in reading and from a high-poverty neighborhood with widespread illiteracy, there's hope! In the early years of school, reading progress can happen quite rapidly when there is a teacher who has a strategic plan and belief in the potential and current strengths of her children. I have just that. The great thing about reading is that kids LOVE to read when you give them choice, interesting books, and books at their just-right level. Not only that, but my school has created a reading culture including friendly reading competitions! Second grade is a crucial year because students who do not read proficiently by 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school (Source: The Annie E. Casey Foundation). This means, that I need the most resources and books possible to be sure that my students are at grade level by the end of 2nd grade.

My Project

The materials that I'm requesting will contribute directly to my students' reading growth each day. I am requesting many books that aimed to help the struggling and emerging readers including, "My First I can Read Books," "Time for Kids" Nonfiction Readers, "Scholastic News" Readers, "National Geographic" Readers, and "high interest, low readability" book sets. I am requesting books for building character including, "Stick and Stone," "Know and Follow Rules," "Cool Down and Work Through Anger," &"The Day the Crayons Came Home." Two Cal Berkeley (my Alma mater and class theme) flags and a logo are important requests as students know we read everyday in order to get to college! I have requested small ottomans, bean bags, chair sock noise reducers, and reading timers. These will ensure that the reading corners and room will be a comfortable place to be fully engaged in reading daily. Students will use the timers at home for tracking reading stamina and minutes read as well.

Your donations will help ensure that my students can dream, read, and achieve!

My students will dream about going to college (Go Cal Bears!), strive to increase their reading levels daily, and achieve success in all academic endeavors. Without a doubt, your donations will help my students to dream, read, and achieve! Thank you for your support and for believing in me and my students.
