This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Children who fall behind in first grade have a one in eight chance of ever catching up to grade level"- Catherine Juel. The K- 2nd grade students that attend my intervention program need to gain the basic reading foundational skills and learn to become proficient in reading while enjoying it!
My elementary students are primarily English language learners from a lower, socio-economic area and they have been identified as being "at-risk" of not meeting benchmarks in reading.
Many of my students have a poor ability to focus, lack home support and spend many hours in after school care. Their teachers often are to busy to address their individual needs to the extent necessary. Also, our students do not have adequate access to leveled readers to support their learning. The students often feel discouraged about their reading and abilities. I want to help these boys and girls feel success and become excited and confident about reading.
My Project
The intervention reading program serves about 120 students a year. It is designed for smaller groups of students to receive forty minutes of preventative reading support daily. I thoroughly diagnose where they are struggling, and create lessons to meet their individual needs to help them become proficient readers. I only have access to the reading program our school is using, and it does not have enough to supplement the needs of these students. The leveled readers will give the students the opportunity to practice reading at their individual level. The books will also expose the students to fiction and nonfiction stories that address skills needed to meet the Common Core Standards. These books will give the students multiple needed opportunities to practice the learned skills in a fun and successful way. My goal is to get them to be reading at grade level and exit my program as quickly as possible.
With the resources and books that I am requesting, I will be able to create a more stimulating, skill-specific learning environment.
It would allow my students more opportunities to be engaged in the individualized reading skills that they need to improve upon in order to be successful in all areas of learning throughout their education.
