My Students

My students are awakening to the idea that they have the potential to impact our world. And, unlike the cliché of an underdeveloped beastie of a human being, these middle school students are some of the kindest, most broad minded and caring individuals I have ever encountered.

At our little school in the woods, we work hard to encourage empathy and creativity as we develop community awareness, and collaborative skills along with strong critical thinking and communication tools.

These students become energized and motivated when given authentic issues to tackle. This year, they have been maturely engaging in discourse around the issues of equity and social justice in ways that could teach some grown ups how to do it right!

My Project

While few of these 6th, 7th and 8th graders think they like to read, all of them love a good story! So, this year, I'd like to honor their interests and abilities with small group book clubs celebrating diversity and justice!

We've read and analyzed "Ghost Boys" by Jewell Parker Rhodes and it was a sensational hit that engendered meaningful discussion and developed a lexicon and a confidence for deconstructing implicit bias... and they want more!

Small group book clubs featuring nontraditional/diverse authors, engaging with topics of social justice, equity and empowerment will feed their story hunger, build empathy and encourage further understanding of a full spectrum of people groups of diverse backgrounds.
