My Students
My students hail from the community of Visitacion Valley in San Francisco, it's not only a hidden gem but it's also the last original neighborhood of San Francisco! For many of my students, English is not their first language and 100% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Despite the many challenges they face, my students come into my classroom full of energy and READY to learn.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and it is key to use books are windows and mirrors to serve as an opportunity to learn about themselves and others through these rich texts.
As a teacher, I want to foster that natural curiosity and love of learning in children and help build their confidence, by lowering their cortisol levels and providing a calm learning space that prioritizes thinking over the right answers.
My Project
These books I've chosen enhance the inclusive community classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that reflects my classroom and the community around them. Books in the classroom are used to help 2nd graders expand their vocabulary, grow their reading muscles, and also as an opportunity for students to see themselves as the main character or to empathize with other life experiences that are different than their own.
By using rich texts that promote diversity, students would have the opportunity to learn and appreciate others that may be different than themselves.
Using books as windows allow students to dispel misunderstandings and misconceptions about cultures they are unfamiliar with. Also, using books as mirrors allow students to feel empowered as they see themselves as the main character. With these new books, like "Drawn Together," "I Dream of Popo," etc, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that look like themselves or other friends in the classroom. This help promote respect and empathy for all types of people.
