Reading Comprehension Fun

My students need 3 iPod touch players, Dot Dots cards and pens, a Readers' Theater Script Box, 40 lapboards, and other learning resources to help us align instruction with the common core.

My Students

With the new common core, my students need more resources to engage them in learning the things that they need to be successful.

I teach a class of 30 middle class 5th graders with 15 girls and 15 boys.

They are eager to learn and are learning more about responsibility in 5th grade as they prepare for middle school. They are active in the community and extra-curricular activities. They come from good, supportive families. It is a joy to watch them learn and understand the world around them. In our Utah school, we started a Spanish immersion program this school year. Many of my students have siblings in the program.

My Project

I am so excited to use these materials in my classroom! The hot dots pens will engage students more in the learning with all of the activity cards for language arts and math. I plan on putting my students into groups to work on the cards, and also to use these pens and cards as a center that students can engage in when they finish work early. The math learning center will be used as a resource with our new math program that aligns to the common core. The program we are currently using is very beneficial, but the math kit will support the program and make it even more effective. The 3 iPod Touches will be used as a tool to support the teaching in my classroom. I have found plenty of apps that can be downloaded onto the iPods for the students to use. We are also doing a 5th grade social studies program at the end of the school year. The iPods will make it easier to have the music that we need for the program. The students can use the iPods during class free time if they need to practice songs.

These resources will benefit my students greatly because they will help the children understand concepts in a different, non-traditional way.

They will use the resources in groups and learn together, helping each other understand. My students will be able to do better on assessments and, more importantly, gain a deeper understanding of language and math concepts.
