I am a first grade teacher. I teach all subject areas. I work at a K-5 school. I would like to use books on tape to help my students build fluency and comprehension skills. Studies have shown as children are learning to read much of their focus goes to word recognition often they do not comprehend what they read. Books on tapes would allow my students to listen to books with expression and fluency. I am hoping this quality will transfer to my students. Research has shown fluency leads to better comprehension. I would like to purchase about 25 books on tape to use in my listening center. I also have portable walkmans. The students are able to check out a Walkman and a book on tape to listen to at home. Books on tape are especially helpful to those children who do not have a parent at home to help them read. They are also helpful to students who are learning English. These materials would benefit 22 children.
