This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the reading teacher. My class is designed as an intervention for ninth grade students who enter high school reading several grades below grade level. Most of my students HATE to read and avoid it at all costs. As a reading teacher, I try to find books students are interested in to get them reading. Research shows that the greatest thing a person can do to increase their reading abilities is simply to read more. Finding high-interest books for teenagers is a challenge, but it is even more challenging to find books teenage males enjoy reading. "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers is an excellent book that my male students LOVE reading. For many of these students, it was the first book they completed on their own. When students have finished reading "Monster," they ask me for other books like it to read. Unfortunately, I have none. Walter Dean Myers is an award-winning author who has written many novels that teenage males relate to and enjoy reading. I would love to offer my male students more reading selections and have selected eight books by Walter Dean Myers. Because many students enjoy reading "Monster," I know my students will be excited to have similar books to choose from to continue reading. With these eight titles, students will be engaged in reading all year long! Thank you for helping me give my students the education they deserve!
