Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade classroom teacher in the Bronx. The students I serve come from low socio-economic backgrounds.
In my second grade class, my students are reading on different levels. Very often we work on a particular reading skill as a class. These skills include: finding the main idea, context clues, fact and opinion, cause and effect and many others. Then the students practice this particular skill with a book they are reading independently.
I believe that providing extra support in the development of these skills for the students during independent practice or in small groups, would greatly increase the reading skills of my students.
My students take much pleasure in participating in center activities. These are activities in which students are working on different projects throughout the reading period. I find that at this developmental stage, second graders truly thrive in situations where the activities are varied from day to day.
I would like to have reading activity centers where the students can work independently or in small groups on reading skills. For example, one center could be a Main Idea Center. Students would go to the center and read cards with passages on them and then sort cards showing the main idea and supporting details. These reading centers would serve my whole class of students.
These reading activity centers would provide extra practice in the reading skills I am trying to instill in my students as well as provide them with a love of learning.
