I teach music at a K-5 school in rural, eastern NC. I have approximately 550 students. In the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade I have just begun a 10 minute center time in each class period. Students either go to the keyboard center, or listening center, while I read aloud to a group. I would like to purchase several different types of reading books for the students to read independently, so that each child may pursue his or her own musical interests. Over time this project will affect approximately 250 students this school year, but its lasting value will be in the ability to affect students in years to come. The value in this project lies in its focus on exposing children to musical topics while reinforcing their independent reading skills.
