My Students
All of my students have limited social skills and have significant language deficit in expressive, receptive, and pragmatic language skills. My students are often frustrated because they cannot communicate their needs and wants. Many times they struggle to keep up with the other students because they do not speak and cannot participate in the same way. I work tremendously hard to expose them to as many experiences within my means, however, this is getting harder and harder. My students are diagnosed with intellectual disability and autism. They learn and respond positively to a curriculum that is visual, kinesthetic and allows them to practice their skills repeatedly.
My Project
Our students are motivated learners who take great pride in their work. It takes them longer than most to learn the skills they need to access the curriculum but they push through and want to learn. They are eager to learn their letters and excited to learn letter sounds but we do not yet have the supplies to have a proper reading center.
I am asking for letter sound tubs, Magnetic Sound Sorting Boards, alphabet letter matching rocket toys and alphabet tracing board to help my students learn their skills in an unconventional way.
We are requesting the letter sound tubs, alphabet matching rocket toys, magnetic sound sorting board and an alphabet tracing board to help give my students hands on practice with phonemic awareness. They will be placed in a reading center and students will be able to engage with these materials as an alternative to learning from a workbook. These materials will give my students the concrete 3-dimensional multi-sensory cues that they needs to help them learn letters, letter sounds, and will help them read. My students learn in unconventional ways and they need materials that help meet these needs.
We hope that with these materials they will continue to learn the pre-reading skills necessary so they can become proficient readers.
