My first grade students need a collection of 5 phonics and literacy tools such as learning centers and teaching tubs to help them master the "trickier" aspects of reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 1st grade in a high-poverty, rural area of southern Virginia. Every year my students begin 1st grade believing that they will learn to read and write but some of the trickier words become roadblocks to this goal.
We all do it automatically now and don't remember how difficult it really is for beginning readers to hear the difference between those vowels in the middle of words or to remember which vowel combination to use when spelling sail or sale, or remembering that "magic e" at the end of the word makes a huge difference when I'm reading words like "can or cane".
The resources I am asking you to help me provide will allow my students to practice these new word patterns and help them read more fluently, with more confidence, and help them to spell words correctly in their daily writing activities.
Your donation will help me provide additional tools that my struggling readers can use to help them conquer those "tricky" word patterns and sounds and say with confidence - "In 1st grade I learned to read and write!"
