My students need 14 pillows to lie down on during free reading time to encourage the idea that reading is fun, relaxing and cozy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Who knew that laying down on the job could get you places! For my students, reclining on pillows during their free reading time will help them associate reading with pleasure and enjoyment and hopefully encourage them to read more! The more they read the more possibilities they have for their future.
I teach special education at a high needs school in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood. I teach students from First to Fifth grade.
Boring, tedious, and difficult are words my students would use to describe reading. How could this be? Because much of the reading done in school is done with a specific purpose -- to learn about grammar, to learn about the Civil War, to solve math problems, and so on. And while this reading is essential, rarely do we read for enjoyment.
To help foster my students' love of reading, I have carved out time during the week for them to choose books to read for pure pleasure. The students cherish this time and look forward to it each week.
Currently, the students lie on the tile floor and read, as this is most comfortable. However, I would like to provide the students with a more relaxing reading environment to further inspire their enjoyment of this reading time.
So I would like to make reading a cushy job...literally. Meaning, I would like to make reading even more pleasurable by providing the students with pillows to lie on while reading their books. It would help students associate reading with being cozy and comfortable. Perhaps this association would further inspire a love of reading.
Your donation will help my students lay down on the job and foster a love of reading that will help lead my students into successful jobs!
