Help me give my students more opportunities to weave phonics and comprehension into motor movement. We can use spray bottles and chalk, playdoh and other supplies to build hand muscles while learning letter sounds and sight words.

My Project
The Special Education caseload at my school includes a wider variety of disabilities, in addition to students with limited English proficiencies. After dedicating this school year to deep-diving into the Science of Reading research, my team and I have learned new ways to reach these struggling readers. My last project involved the multi-sensory, multi-modality component of learning to interact with phonemes and whole words. This has been a hit, and is showing great success.
Now, we'd like to add in even more research-based practices.
These include explicitly teaching articulatory gestures, with mirrors- showing students new to English, or with articulation disabilities, how English phonemes are formed in our mouth, and what it should look like. In order to teach students how to manipulate sounds (phonemes), and transfer them to graphemes (letters), we need more tools like spray bottles, more play-doh, and velcro dots, to build hand muscles and let students experiment with syllables and phonemes in an engaging way. This also transfers to graphemes through fine motor capabilities in writing.
Finally, Scarborough's Reading Rope, developed through research on the science of how our brains learn to read, shows us that if a student does not comprehend what they can now decode, they still cannot read. They need to understand the vocabulary and language that they are reading. This is especially important for students with language deficits, and also with limited English proficiency. These Read-Alouds will allow us to instruct on the phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary concepts all in one. Exposure to rich language and explicit examples of what were are teaching them to manipulate with their mouths and hands, is essential.
These resources will help us continue to reach our students with disabilities such as language and speech deficits, specific learning disabilities, and limited English Proficiency.
