This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! I teach alternate curriculum to moderate/severe students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They thrive on structure and routine and surprise and delight me every day.

Although my students are far below grade level in academics, they are amazing and unique in their own ways.

They show creativity and artistic talents in ways that I could only dream of possessing! Their personalities are always at the forefront of everything they do, and they are able to surprise me and make me laugh with their antics every day. I love that they own being the "big kids" among the special day classes at the school and love to show how cool they are and lead the younger kids.

My Project

As a first year teacher, I was not given any appropriate reading books for my students. They have independent reading time every day, and what they currently use is what I was able to scrounge up from leftover piles from other teachers. They are not at the appropriate reading levels for my students and do not hold their interest. I would love to have reading material that interests them and that they can successful read independently, books like Dr. Seuss, Elephant and Piggie, and I Can Read books.

This donation will provide books for my students that they are able to read independently during reading time.

As they become more fluent readers, my hope is that they will begin to love reading!
