Reading Books With Characters That are Diverse Like Us!
My students need quality books with diverse characters to read as novel units.
This project expired on December 5, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
We are a small school with big needs. Our schools is a Title school filled with smart, funny, beautiful, sweet, kiddos. They love to read but often we don't have books that have characters that act, sound, or look like them. My class last year read Esperanza Rising. I could see the joy on their faces and hear the wonder in their voices when they read about a Mexican girl who spoke Spanish just like them.
Reading books with diverse and relatable characters makes a real difference in my students education.
It was truly the best part of our year. I bought all of the books myself last year. I would like to expand of novel units by purchasing more.
It's really important to offer my students books they WANT to read. If not it's a chore. Last year we read a book - Esperanza Rising- that resonated with almost everyone in the room. It had real world themes like class, poverty, responsibility, and loss. It appealed to the boys as well as the girls.
It made me heart happy when one of my ELL students asked me "was it time to read yetttttttt?
" ? It was then that I realized how powerful novel units could be. We had wonderful discussions that were very relevant even though the book was set in the depression years. I was am amazed at how insightful my 5th graders could be. Our school is small and have lots of families that can barely afford life much less to donate to our class library. I feel like when we read as a whole class it strengthens our class culture.
