My students need "The Chocolate Touch" and other classroom sets of books to help understand moral lessons and how to be responsible peers within our new school year together.
Currently, I serve 20 students at an urban school right on the edge of Charlotte, NC. 63% of my students are below grade level in reading and 59% are below in math. In my class, 10% of my students have Individualized Educational Plans (IEP's). Many of my classroom materials have been passed down from previous teachers and the materials are very old and worn. Therefore, I would like to provide my students with new materials that are grade-level appropriate to teach literacy skills. For some of my students, this will be their only positive interaction with quality materials for the day.
My Project
When students are engaged that's when true excitement for learning begins. I have found in my years of teaching kids really enjoy being able to follow along or read the books again after I've read them. When kids are excited about what is being read to the class in turn it helps kids make connections to what the are learning and their own life.
When my students are able to connect to what they are reading and learning about, the adventure and excitement begins and students start to become more engaged in their own learning.
With the book series and "The Chocolate Touch" it will allow the kids to go back throughout the year at their own pace to reread by themselves, with a partner, or a small group.
