My students need material for motivational centers including sight word stamps, rhyming activities, word families, beginning sounds and fun PBS kids shows including Between the Lions and Sid the Science Kid to help promote reading, investigating, exploring and learning with fun characters.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's time to think Outside the box of learning with just books. Once a week we use PBS Kids to help expand our knowledge and help develop strategies for problem solving. Unfortunately without Cable in the Classroom, we have to rely on me purchasing DVDs.
My classroom has 25 students of all levels in it.
Some students can read already, some can't recognize basic levels. But one thing they all have in coming, is their desire and excitement to learn to read.
My students are in a Title 1, free lunch, 50% bilingual ,very low income area. And yet they don't let that bother them. Our school is trying to provide all we can for the children. However we have had so many things cut this year , due to the economy , that the children just get the basics. Teachers have so many furlough days now, that we don't have extra dollars to buy the children things. I know I spend at least 100 a month on the children and would love any additional help.
My Project
We need material for motivational centers including sight word stamps, rhyming activities, word families, beginning sounds and fun PBS kids shows including Between the Lions and Sid the Science Kid to help promote reading, investigating, exploring and learning with fun characters.
Over the last year I purchased PBS Kids Show Sid the Science Kids. Sid does many investigations at a kindergarten level. For example he finds out why his shoes are shrinking, instead of his feet growing. Sid explores and the children learn with him. Sid uses math and science to problem solve. I am asking for replacement DVDs as mine don't run anymore.
In Between the Lions the children learn to read (our new series we just started) cute puppets help the children phonetically spell out words. They break the words in part and then have the children solve to figure the words out. This show uses great songs, videos, energetic methods to promote reading. In the one episode my students watched, they were glued to the screen and spelling 'ar' words. By the end of the 15 minutes, they were spelling part, park, art, dark and others hope to continue this.
The final component in the exploration is some centers for the children to do. These reading centers will allow continue learning.
The DVDs and Center activities will help the children grow in their science and reading development.
This will future assist in their problem solving, reading, and comprehension skills. These activities will also play a big part in the vocabulary development and continue their life long learning.
