I teach in a low economic school with diverse students. I have students who are special needs, limited English proficiency, and various educational backgrounds. I have students from Mexico, Cuba, and Malaysia. The cultures make my classroom a wonderful environment but also includes some educational challenges as this age level does not receive ESL services. Every student is eager to learn, but limited resources sometimes makes teaching difficult. I love coming to work each day but would like to give my students every opportunity possible.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to have books in their home to encourage reading at home. Many of students do not have access to books in their home and no transportation to visit a library. These materials will help my students to read books at home and develop a love of reading.
I want every student to have a chance to bring books home and enjoy sharing stories with their parents.
This will allow reading to become a family activity that encourages communication and help families to become excited about reading together.
I also plan to incorporate games and writing activities with each backpack to expand their reading experience. There is a reading program at our school but unfortunately it only allows a few students to take book bags home and I have some very sad students each week. I want every child to have this opportunity.
