This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come from diverse linguistic and social economic backgrounds. They are also learning in two languages, Spanish and English as part of our Spanish Dual Language Program. Families are excited and are eager to support them in their journey to becoming bilingual and biliterate, but many do not have access to Spanish books at their child kindergarten level and interest. We are also having a school wide reading challenge this school year: to read at least 100 books in kindergarten.
This project will provide Spanish alphabet and nonfiction books and bookmarks.
The books are early readers, meaning that they are easy for most students to read independently and are highly engaging for young readers, like my students.
Kindergarteners will be able to take home 2-3 books at a time to read at home with their families, independently, a pet or even to their favorite stuff animal. Having access more than the 2 books they get to check out weekly from our school library will help them reach their goal of reading 100 books. Reading will increase their imagination, language, literacy skills, memory and so many other benefits.
The bookmarks will be used as rewards and to help students keep track of their reading goal. Students will be able to earn a bookmarks for every 20 books they read and to keep going after they meet the 100 books goal!
