Help me give my students exposure to cultural diversity and awareness through the use of picture books.

My Students

I teach at a PreK- 5th school with a unique environment. It is located between two military bases, and this directly impacts our diverse population. The school is also located on the edge of the mainland in a coastal community. Some of our students travel a high-rise bridge each day, while others live deeper inland.

Many of our local families have a deep connection to the school as well, as it was where they attended, and where their parents attended.

My Project

Learning through picture books is not a new concept, but it can be overwhelming when there are so many books from which to choose. However, when you have book studies that cover your standards through carefully chosen books highlighting diversity and cultural awareness, you have arrived in teacher reading heaven.

Pairing the books with the studies, I will be able to use them not only to cover expected reading standards, but also to give my children insight to people and places different from them.

This will give my students an opportunity to explore and appreciate differences in other cultures and countries.
