My Students

My students are in middle school, an age where they are learning to become more independent and are becoming more reflective about their needs as learners. We are a Title I school in Philadelphia, and the majority of our students come from low-income homes and are unable to afford many things most of us take for granted. School is a place they should be able to count on consistently to provide the education they are entitled to.

Every child deserves an equitable education in an engaging environment.

My Project

The Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project is a research-based system of teaching students critical reading, writing, and inquiry skills. This year, my 7th grade students will be learning via this system. A tenet of TCRWP is to gather students in an area away from the confines of their desks to work collaboratively with the teacher and then return to their tables to work independently. The separation of spaces, including pillows and a rug, allows students to focus on specific work in specific areas of the room.

Flexible seating is critical for comfort while working as well as for providing choice.

The notion of providing choice may seem small compared to developing reading and writing skills. Choice plays a large part in a student's participation and skill set. Students are more likely to engage in learning when they have a choice. This is also an opportunity to exercise autonomy over education, something our students generally do not have. An engaging environment coupled with autonomy increases the likelihood of total student engagement and learning.
