This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at Camino Nuevo Charter Academy in the MacArthur Park area of Los Angeles. I currently teach kindergarten.
Reading and writing with and to kindergartners is essential as they learn to read and write themselves. The best way to teach them to read is through big books. They sit and listen while the teacher reads and other times they read along with the teacher. I also teach them to write through a shared or interactive experience. They watch and listen as I think aloud and write my sentence and other times they help me write the letters and periods. A reading and writing center that includes an easel board and storage would facilitate these daily activities.
The reading and writing center that I am requesting has white boards on both sides so that all students can see while I write and it's accessible to them when it's their turn. It also has a ledge to hold the big books. This would free my hands so I can model how to follow along with my finger as I read the words.
