My Project
These books and journal materials will continue to foster the importance and the joy of reading and writing as part of my Visual Art curriculum. My class periods are 90 minutes each, and the agenda is always consistent, with the first 10 minutes being time for reading or writing about Art!
The art books requested will be added to my class library and be offered as choice for independent reading, and with the composition books, I'll make each student a beautiful Art Journal for their writing.
I'll do this by adding a decorative cover to each journal with each child's name. If it is a beautiful little journal and personalized with their names, they are more likely to treat it with care. Students write critiques about artists' work we are studying, summaries of short articles from Art Scholastic Magazine (provided by my PTA), self reflections of art processes and other writing prompts.
Sometimes when students first arrive in my class and realize they will not only be making art, but also reading and writing, there's sometimes a little hesitation, but they quickly realize the joy and importance to read and write across all subjects, even art! I will grade the journals after 5 entries and always write a comment to each student about their ideas. I feel this is so important. In the past, when I've given their graded journals back to them, they always thumb through the pages to see the grade, but also to see the comments. I feel this encourages them and they feel heard. I made these journals for my students last year and it was a success, but last year, I bought all of the materials myself. If you believe in this idea, donations to this project are welcomed! Thank you.
