Reading and Speaking Practice for ESL Students

Help me give my students more headsets so they can practice reading and speaking into microphones. This is exceptionally powerful for myself, the classroom teacher, and the special education teacher to listen to all students read individually.

My Students

My school is an urban school in Indianapolis, Indiana and is unique in that we have students from 33 different countries and we have 23 languages spoken by our students and their families. Many of these students are new arrivals to the United States and many are refugees. Others are second generation immigrants. For many of our students, school is the only consistent part of their lives.

The diversity is a wonderful environment to work in and the ESL students are eager to learn to speak, write, read, communicate, and interact in English.

I work with Kindergarten, second-grade, and third-grade ESL students and they comprise approximately 60% of our school population. I love watching their faces light up as they learn new concepts in math, new vocabulary, as they level up in reading, and as they begin to write longer paragraphs. They truly love to learn!

My Project

I'm requesting more headsets to allow more of my students to practice speaking and reading into microphones. We use these headsets with Raz-Kids to allow the students to practice reading aloud even when an English speaking adult isn't available to read with them. This is exceptionally powerful because the program will tell them a word if they click on it and it records it for the teachers to listen to later.

The kids love this opportunity and have been begging for more headsets and I can't wait to give them more.

They love reading and I love this special opportunity to get to hear them read one-on-one even if it is a recording.
