My Students
The dawn of the 20th Century ushered in a new era, one of global warfare. Gone were the days when conflict could be confined to a single set of enemies, or even to a single continent. As part of our new social studies curriculum my students need to learn the cases and results of conflict and war.
I teach in a school that is high poverty, over 60% are economically disadvantaged.
We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. Just in my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go during the school year. Many of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse. I need materials that all my students can read for our social studies units. That means I need materials on a wide range of reading levels.
My Project
My school is not a Title One school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged. Our district recently adopted a new social studies curriculum, but we have no classroom library with materials to teach the topic of conflict and war in the 20th century. My students have nothing that is appropriate and on grade level to read, and as a result they are not able to do reports. Having up to date books in the classroom for my students to use would help them to understand the key concepts and expand their knowledge base. The books I have selected have pictures and illustrations. These books are materials I desperately need to teach my students.
Your wonderful donation and help could make a world of difference to my students.
With your help my students would be able to read and research the causes of conflict in the 20th century. They would be able to learn about social studies. They would also improve their reading ability. I am confident that with your support my students would improve their ability to communicate effectively. They would be successful and their self image would improve. Please help my students.
