I teach reading and do enrichment activities with small groups of students in grades 1-5 in a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet school located in a high-need community. I try to get these students to love reading by doing various activities to connect them with what they read. I am working to make reading enjoyable, since reading is the key to success in the future!
It is really hard to do a meaningful and enjoyable novel study for a group of students when there is only one copy of the book in the school! I have so many ideas to use with this book including having the students do a painting while laying under their desk. Most of these students don't have a lot of reading options outside of school, so I want to provide them with a great one by using this book if I can get enough copies.
In order for me to use my great ideas for this project to support reading, critical thinking, and art goals, I need copies of "From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg. I want to do more than just assign reading and have students answer questions on a worksheet. I want to do activities that go along with the magnet them of my school by doing various activities that involve visual and performing arts. I work closely with teachers in these areas to integrate these ideas.
Did you ever get to lay on the floor and draw or paint a picture to go along with a story that you had read? I want my students to have that chance to really connect with what they are reading! You will be making it possible for me to do enrichment activities with my students based on a novel they are reading for class.
