I teach first grade at a low income elementary school in Washington, DC. We are a school that believes in exposing children to as many experiences, places, ideas, and people as possible. In pre-K through third grades, we conduct a language immersion program where teaching assistants speak to the children only in Spanish.
My classroom lacks a carpet for my children to meet upon. In first grade, teacher read-alouds are still a very important part of instruction, but are very difficult to do with children in their desks. Their attention spans are shorter, and they are less engaged in the book because they do not have easy access to the print and pictures. A carpet is also the best place to hold "meeting time" where children can share what they have learned, share their feelings, and build community within the classroom.
A carpet would allow my wonderful little learners to become engaged in books, develop of love of reading, and build a strong community in our classroom. The children would all fit on the rug we would like. This particular carpet displays a map of the world, thus supporting our efforts to expose children to many places and would become a magic carpet to transport my children to the places we read and learn about.
