Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being able to read is something that is taken for granted by many people. However it does not come easy to everyone. Being a person that has struggled with reading my whole life, I understand the frustrations my students are faced with.

Our school is a Title One School in an urban area.

My students range in grades 5th-8th grade. They are all students with special needs ranging from Autism to Intellectually Disabled. I have the same students all day, teaching them every subject. While my students are behind in all subjects (reading, writing, and math) my major concern is helping them with reading. They all try very hard but it takes them a lot longer to obtain new knowledge and be able to apply it. This leads to a much slower pass. My students deserve all the opportunities to learn that the other students in the school get. Because of their disabilities it is hard to see great growth.

My Project

My students struggle everyday with reading. They are all students with special needs who need as much help as they can get. They are all several grade levels behind in reading. With the iPad, I would be able to create individualized reading programs that would target areas of weakness for my students. The iPad would allow me to have a student working on his or her own personal educational goals independently which would free me up to work with other students. They would be able to work on basic reading fundamentals in a fun and interesting way. My students would also enjoy having stories read to them since they lack the ability to read chapter books. An iPad would give them a great opportunity to experience literature that interests them. Books could be read to them so they wouldn't struggle trying to read it on their own. Students would have a whole new world opened up that they would otherwise be missing out on.

The ability to read is the most important gift I can give to my students.

Being able to read will open up so many doors to them when they enter adulthood. I want them to experience full and happy lives and the easiest way for them to do so is by being able to read.
