My students need an ipad in order to work on reading and math skills independently which will allow me to work with small groups that need extra teacher time.
Ever heard the saying "There's an App for that"? Well there are hundreds of apps available for the ipad that teach and reinforce reading and math skills.
As a kindergarten teacher at a Title 1 school, not all of my students come in on the same academic level.
Some need a little extra teacher time to comprehend the concepts that I teach every day. Sometimes that might be a small group of 3 or 4, or it could also be one on one with me for a more intense remediation. Most of the students in my class would not have any other opportunity to use such great technology and in the world we live in today I feel it is very important to expose them to all the electronic resources they will be in contact with in the years to come.
My Project
Having a classroom ipad will allow small groups of children to work independently using a reading or math app which will allow me to work with those students that need extra help. Some of these apps available cover reading skills such as letter and sound recognition, spelling, vocabulary, sight word recognition, as well as math skills like counting, patterns, and addition and subtraction. Other uses for the ipad would be for whole group instruction with the ability for it to be connected to my smartboard.
As a teacher I purchase many materials for my classroom out of my own pocket, and am happy to do it.
However the ipad is something I could never afford on my own, but I feel it can be a great teaching tool and is just one more method of instruction that might help me to reach all children and make them successful. This equipment would also benefit classes in years to come, not just the group of children I have this year.
