My classroom contains 17 students ages 4 and 5 years old. My students are special because of their ability to to thrive and their dedication to learning at such a young age. The neighborhood they reside in has a high poverty and umemployment rate and often effects the culture of our school and classroom. One hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch. Home life often effects the performance of my students because they sometimes come to school hungry, tired, and even displaced from their home. Even with these circumstances, I have a group of students that are happy and so grateful for the fun and learning we do in class. They often tell me I'm the best teacher in the world for little things like giving them graham crackers as a midmorning snack. I do want to be the best teacher to them and my goal is to remedy the effects of home by creating a loving environment in my classroom and providing the students with safety, fun, and engaging activities that will prepare them for Kindergarten and give them the proper start that they deserve to their education.
The materials will give my students new experiences in the classroom and provide fun and engaging new ways for me to introduce literacy and math activities. To prepare for Kindergarten our curriculum focuses on identifying letters and numbers. We then move on to letter sounds and building words. The dry-erase boards will be used to practe writing skills. The magnet letters are used to help the students identify names/sounds and build words. The number construction kit will help the student learn to identify and write numbers. The microscopes will give a class a way to explore science. Currently we lack science tools and are limited to only magnifying glasses. The microscopes and slides will introduce them to a new tool and new ways to make observations. The card stock, construction paper, and writing paper are materials we use for various projects and it seems we always need more! The Cricut Explore provides a efficient way to create classroom materials professionally and quickly to go along with activities. An example would be a counting activity with the story "Frogs on a Log". The Cricut can be used to create felt frogs for the students to recreate the story instead of spending additional dollars on a similar material. The Cricut can also be used as a literacy and technology tool that allows the students to create designs and bring them to life! Technology is a big part of my classroom and I am constantly incorporating it in new ways.
