My students need a listening center that include headphones and CD player, as well as books on CD as read alongs that consist of a variety of different reading levels and genres.
Each morning we start our day with independent reading where students are to select books on their reading level and read for an extended amount of time. By the end of the school year, I would like my students to share the love of reading and to be reading on grade level.
My school is a title 1 school with a large English Language Learner population.
This means that majority of my students speak another language other than English at home. Over the past few years teaching, I have always had students in my classroom who are learning English for the very first time. I want to have those students actively engaged while independent reading. In past years I did not have a listening center and felt that my students who were learning to read English were subject to reading lower level books that did not interest them. This year I want those students to feel as though they are a part of the classroom community and to be able to enjoy the Beverly Clearly, Gary Paulsen and Roald Dahl books that we all have grown to love as children ourselves
My Project
My students need a listening center that include headphones and CD player, books on CD as read alongs that consist of a variety of different reading levels and genres.
Throughout the school year, my students will be expected to read independently for an extended period of time. Students will be able to select books that interest them on their current reading level. I am requesting a variety of chapter and picture books on CD, such as Sheep in a Jeep, Henry and Mudge and Ramona, at various reading levels to expose my students to books they have not read before.
Selected students will be invited to the listening center to select a book on CD and read along while listening. This will help those students with reading fluency and stamina. Students will be able to enjoy these books while learning to become fluent readers.
Your donations will not only help our classroom library grow, but it will also give excitement to my students who are English Language Learners gain access to books on CD that interest them.
