My Students

My students are energetic, fun-loving, eager second graders who look forward to coming to school every day. My students face many challenges such as disabilities, lack of supplies, and language barriers because their native language is not English, but despite these challenges, they are eager and ready to learn.

Every day, I strive to meet their various needs in any way that I can.

I try to create an engaging and peaceful work environment so their minds can soar! By making sure they have what they need to be academically successful, safe, healthy, and secure, I am helping them to be as productive as possible.

My students live in a low-income, inner-city neighborhood, and they have struggles at home. It is my job to make sure they are able to accomplish what they wish to in school. One of my goals, as a teacher, is to provide things that my children are lacking and to create a positive learning environment. My students love to experience new things and visit new places such as the many field trips that I take them on. I also try to keep their bellies full and their minds open to learning new things.

My Project

In my classroom, we will be learning literacy, math, science, and social studies. What better way to learn about the world than by reading magazines. Reading is an essential skill that is very important to begin learning at a young age. I will be using these magazines along with other materials to build on my 2nd graders' reading skills. My students will receive at least one magazine per week (sometimes more when we receive Science Spin) in which they will learn about current events relating to math, science, and social studies. Each magazine will have activity sheets for the students to complete following reading the articles. These activities will help students practice and reinforce skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, recognizing text features, graphing, addition, and subtraction. These skills are used to help make real-world connections. They will also play the games on the website that are created to accompany each issue. I will also play videos that give background information and provide a real-world example so that the students can gain further knowledge about the subjects.

By incorporating the use of magazines in my classroom, I hope to foster a love of learning and reading while also learning math, science, and social studies.

When we read these magazines, I hope that my students will gain an appreciation and love for learning about science and social studies along with reading. They will also gain a better understanding of the world around them and hopefully learn to love reading.
