I am blessed to have students who are globally-minded and care about issues that impact people all around the world. They are compassionate and work hard to demonstrate respect in and out of the school setting.
Every day I am energized by my students' willingness and motivation to become better readers and writers.
They work very hard to transfer skills from reading to writing and vice versa. It is amazing to witness how much growth happens in a single year.
This class set of the award-winning book Number the Stars will provide the opportunity for my students to read and learn the significance of the the Holocaust. Number the Stars is told from the point of view of ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen. The story is set in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark in September 1943, the third year of the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Annemarie and her best friend Ellen, who is Jewish, are stopped by soldiers on their way home from school.
This set of books will be used for our Historical Fiction Club--part of Readers' Workshop.
Students analyze themes and universal messages that teach compassion, respect, and cultural awareness.
