My students need chapter books written by inspiring authors like Kate DiCamillo, and books with both classical and modern characters.

My Students
One of my favorite quotes comes from Dr. Seuss, best known for authoring stories like The Cat in The Hat and many others: "Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" As a teacher, I am in awe every day with the way my students think, wonder, and respond to situations that arise in their daily lives.
Our school is culturally diverse, and our classroom is filled with differences; yet we have one thing in common, we are a close family.
We value these differences and see the opportunity to learn from all of our backgrounds and experiences. As in the story of "Oh, The Places You'll Go," we have made friendships with others that are on their own adventures. We will continue to connect with those in our school, our community, and globally. On our adventures, true friendships will form, and we will become a closer school family. Literature helps unite us, inspire us, and develop a love for adventures and the new places we'll go.
My Project
The chapter books I am requesting will help my students learn valuable literacy and social skills. I have always done Guided Reading groups, but this year I want to dive deeper into the meaning of specific texts, by discussing these books in our "Book Club." Book Clubs are fun and engaging, and allow students to connect with not just the book they are reading and discussing, but also the others who are reading the book along with them. Having time to discuss, question, and reflect upon the text will greatly help my students with communication skills. Book discussions encourage students to take turns and share; develop and use new vocabulary; and learn to use language to predict, reflect, and solve problems.
Another benefit for having Book Clubs is my students will also work on literacy skills.
Students will learn to read more fluently and with expression. Comprehension skills will increase as they journal and reflect collaboratively with others about questions regarding these books. Language skills will improve too because they will be reading and learning new vocabulary to use while reflecting and sharing with other students. The books I selected will give my students an opportunity to have discussions that take place during our Book Club meetings. Students will develop a deeper understanding of books, practice analyzing as they read, and learn to appreciate the perspectives of their peers as they talk about the same book.
Finally, the books I am requesting will help us create more of a connection with one another in our classroom. We will share ideas, feelings, values, and thoughts in a small collaborative setting. Through our chapter books and discussions, we will embark upon a variety of adventures. "Oh, The Places 'We'll' Go."
