Reading Adventures With the One and Only Ivan

My Project

Our school is a Title 1 school with a very diverse population of students. The large majority of our students come from low-income families. Because of their economic status, it is often difficult for my students' families to provide a variety of books and materials for them. Despite the many challenges my students face on a daily basis, they have a strong desire to learn and grow and be the best they can be.

Although my students demonstrate a strong desire to learn and grow,

many of my students struggle with learning to read and don't enjoy it. I want to support my students in their learning any way I can and I know how exciting it is to share, discuss, and write about a great story. This story is one my students have always related to because of their love for animals. I have used this book set in my classroom for several years, and my students have always enjoyed it and been engaged by it. Unfortunately, my current class set is well worn (many of the books are being held together by tape!) and needs to be replaced. Through this wonderful story we will learn about having the courage to learn, grow, be free, and the importance of being our best selves. These are all things I try to instill in my students and classroom. In my experience, when students are supported in reading and discussing a great book, they truly enjoy the experience and it stays with them. If students fall in love with books, they will want to read more and students who read more achieve more.
