Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Though my 8th Grade Metro Atlanta classroom is filled with hopes and dreams, the reality my students face at home is often difficult and dire.

Though I tell my students that a difficult home should not be an excuse to lead anything less than their best life, it is easier to say than do. I want to give them tangible hope. I want them to experience a story of a real person who achieved greatness in the face of adversity so they can overcome their own struggles. Non-fiction is difficult to teach and I hope that by trying for a life lesson as well, they will come away learning a lot more than dates and names.

I am asking for a collection of biographies and other non-fiction books to show my kids that obstacles can be overcome. Difficulty can be defeated. Dreams can be lived. If my kids are surrounded by stories of people who would not accept failure, then they will not readily surrender in their own life. Tenacity is a great skill that can be earned, practice and learned by anyone. I want them to read about how far a little tenacity can take you.

Yes, as a Language Arts teacher I want my students to read as much as possible. But, I see my job as being something more than that. I want my students to achieve greatness outside of my classroom as well. With your generous help, they can read of greatness in books and hopefully develop the tenacity it takes to lead a great life
