My Students

I teach middle school ELA and Creative Writing at a public charter school in Michigan. My students are mostly low-income, minority children who deserve to feel represented in my classroom in every way. They work super hard and the are eager to learn and succeed. I want them to realize that they are capable of so much more than they think! By having books that they can relate to, my kids will be more engaged and eager to read. We love classic literature but I want everyone to feel seen and heard and like they too can conquer anything they set their minds to!

My Project

I am requesting class sets of "All American Boys," and "Brown Girl Dreaming" so I can incorporate them in to my curriculum. I plan to incorporate these books into my 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts curriculum because I think it is important for my students to read about topics and issues they relate to. I personally learn best when I have some sort of connection or interest in what I am reading/writing.

Like my students, I tend to go astray when I cannot relate or personally understand the topic at hand.

That said, I think it is important for all of my students to feel represented in the books we read and the stories they write.
